Presenter: Chuck Sutherland
 
Topic: Off-Season Boating - Cold Shock and Hypothermia
 
Description: The immediate effects of cold water immersion will be discussed. Without a PFD and dressed only in street clothes, victims often drown long before hypothermia sets in. On cold water, dress to swim and always wear a PFD! Be prepared to do your own rescues!
 
Biography: Chuck Sutherland has been a kayaker for 30 years having started the ACA Sea Kayaking Instruction program. He has studied and written about cold water kayaking accidents for 20 years and participated in cold water paddling workshops for more than 15 years. He has interests in skin boats, rolling, and arctic paddles.

Topic: The Greenland Qajaq
 
Description: Examine the history of the kayak and look at the tools and skills associated with traditional sea kayaking. We will look at the evolution of the paddles, hunting tools, and the kayak. We will have a variety of paddles boats and gear on hand to illustrate their construction and uses
 
Biography: Chris started paddling in grade school and over the years progressed through solo and tandem white water canoeing on into expedition canoeing across the United States and Canada. In 1992 he took up sea kayaking and quickly settled into the sea and surf as his primary interest. Chris is an ACA Open Water Coastal Kayak Instructor-Trainer and BCU 4-Star paddler. In 2000 he picked up a Greenland paddle. He soon became a traditional Greenland skills instructor and founded Tuktu Paddles. Chris has been an instructor and guide with outdoor discovery schools of Maine, has appeared at symposiums around the country and, worked with many area clubs and organization to promote paddle sports

Biography: John is a long-time paddler, as well as an ARC Instructor and Instructor-Trainer in multiple disciplines. He is also active with the local Boy Scout of America
 
 
Presenter: Gordon Dayton

Biography: A paddler since the late 90’s, Gordon has delved into many aspects of the sport from sea kayak touring to flat-water and down-river racing. He is an ACA Instructor in Basic Coastal Kayak and also holds Essentials Certifications in Canoe and Kayak for Touring and River. He also holds instructor certifications from American Red Cross and is certified in 3-Star skills and as a Canoe Lifeguard with British Canoe Union. Gordon is President of a local Kayak Club: North Atlantic Canoe and Kayak – NACK, is the Coastal Chair for the Atlantic Division of the ACA, and also serves as Clubs Liaison to the ACA Safety, Education and Instruction Council. When not paddling he masquerades as Engineering Manager for a local electronics components company. Gordon is interested in fostering paddling as a life sport and improving the ability of paddlers in our region

Biography: Elizabeth grew up around the waters of the Great South Bay and has been teaching Kayaking for over 10 years. She worked as an environmental educator for 15 year until founding Sea Kayaking Skills and Adventures, Ltd. in 2000. She is an ACA Open Water Coastal instructor and also serves as Safety Education and Instruction chairperson and Divisional Instructional Facilitator for the ACA Atlantic division. She is also an Instructor-Trainer for American Red Cross and holds certifications from British Canoe Union. As a marathon kayak racer she is a 5x National Sea Kayak Champion, ICF Master Women Champion, and represented the United States as a member of National Kayaking Team at the 2003 ICF Marathon World Championships.

Topic: Kayak Safety Equipment and Outfitting
 
Description: A lot of safety equipment exists for the sea kayaker. From laser flares to dry suits to inflatable kayak supports…but what do you need when adventuring on the water? This lecture and demonstration will acquaint you with the required equipment, the optional equipment, and some equipment that might be better left on shore (or in the store). Bring your own equipment for evaluation and discussion!
 
Biography: Timothy is an ACA Coastal Kayaking Instructor, with an Open-water rating. He has been rated as a BCU sea kayaking coach, (level 3), and is one of the first five ACA-certified Traditional Skills (Greenland) kayaking instructors in the organization. A professional educator, Tim’s instruction stresses student involvement and practical learning experiences. He most enjoys paddling in the surf and in rough water

Description: Dry suits provide the ultimate in cold water protection, when they are kept in good condition and, you layer correctly under them. Find out how the pros do it
 
Biography: Frank is the regional OS System Representitive and well as owner of Frank Copren Repairs where he repairs all types of Drysuits including recreational and diving. He is also a certified Dive Instructor.

Topic: Presentation 1: Expedition and Trip Planning
Topic: Presentation 2: Ireland Circumnavigation Presentation
 
Description: The toughest decisions of an expedition are sometimes not made on the water, but on shore before the 20, 30 or 40 Miles crossing: To go out, or not go out. Looking at weather forecasts, tidal charts, the marine charts, Coastal Pilots books, and taking local knowedge in account, we look and decide when and if a departure for a longer crossing on Ireland's West Coast is feasible, or not, and to learn about the few options kayakers have when things go wrong during a 20+ Miles crossing in a lively marine environment.
 
Biography: Marcus has been paddling in sea kayaks for the past 4 years. In 2007 Marcus successfully circumnavigated Ireland as a fundraiser for the Royal National Lifeboat Association, a trip of over 1,100 nautical miles in 42 days. The Summer of 2007 was described by the Irish weather service Met Eireann as the coldest and windiest in the history of the Irish weather service and thus provided unexpected challenges to the trip.

Past expeditions brought Marcus to Patagonia/Chile (2006), the South and West Coast of Australia (2007), and Nova Scotia, Canada (2005).

In Summer of 2008, Marcus will attempt to circumnavigate Iceland a 1,450 Miles voyage along shores considered to be one of the toughest marine areas in the world, the North Atlantic Ocean, seriously compromising past kayak expeditions.

Biography: US Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 01 Representatives.

Janice Heitz is a Coast Guard Auxiliary Boat Crew Coxswain, She is AUXOP qualified meaning she has completed all C.G. Auxillary specialty courses. She is a past Flotilla Commander and is currently a Flotilla Public Education Officer as well serving on the Division 01 staff.

Bob Hargraves is a qualified Auxiliary Boat Crewman, a past Flotilla Vice Commander and currently serves in Computer Services on both the Division and Flotilla levels.

Biography: Steve has kayaked and fished extensively throughout the metropolitan area, from upstate Mahopac to Massapequa to Montauk, in pursuit of both fresh and saltwater species. Equally at home on a sit-on-top or in a sea kayak he has many years experience fishing local waters. He is a New York State licensed Fishing Guide and a member of the Montauk Surfcasters, North Atlantic Canoe and Kayak, and the American Canoe Association.

Topic: The Long Island River Otter Project
 
Description: A presentation on the habits and ecology of the river otter, the results of a winter 2008 survey of river otters on Long Island, and how you can contribute valuable information to the Long Island River Otter Project.
 
Biography: Mike is a veteran naturalist, writer and environmental consultant. He teaches "The Nature of New York" at CUNY and is author of "Exploring East End Waters: A Natural History and Paddling Guide".
 
 
Presenter: Sandy Noyes
 
Topic: The 2007 Kayak Championships in Greenland: a Photography Journal.
 
Description: Noyes photographed the national championship event in July, 2007 at Ilulissat. Rolling, ropes, racing, glaciers, landscape and a prehistoric site, with running commentary
 
Biography:Sandy has 40 years experience as a photographer. His work is represented in museum collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, Rochester, High Museum of Art, Atlanta. He has taught fine printing techniques at the International Center of Photography in New York City, has led photography workshops at ICP, Catskill Center for Photography at Woodstock, and State University of New York at New Paltz. He has participated in 40 group exhibitions and has had 7 solo shows. He grew up on LI's north shore enjoying water sports and is a member of NACK, Connyak, Sound Kayakers, and Hudson River Water Trails. He's focusing on learning Greenland-style rolls in 2008 and wants to return to Greenland next July.

Description: Kayaks and canoes can take you, the photographer, to places that other boats simply can not. Incredible beauty awaits those who can get to these special places. Keeping yourself and your valuable equipment safe, however, requires some unique skills. Frank Chillemi is a professional photographer who uses muscle powered boats extensively in his work. This presentation will address those skills as well as showcase some of Frank's photos made from these versatile watercraft.
 
Biography: Frank is a photographer and educator who heads up the Photo & Art Department for one of Long Island’s largest companies. He book of photography, Windjammers, Lighthouses and other Treasures of the Maine Coast, contains many photographs made from kayaks. Frank is a warm and engaging speaker

Topic: How You Can Help with Marine Mammals and Sea Turtle Sightings and Strandings
 
Description: Explore your ocean backyard with the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation’s Foundation Director/Senior Biologist, Robert DiGiovanni, Jr. Learn about different species of seals, dolphins, whales, and sea turtles found around Long Island and what to do when you see a marine mammal or sea turtle.
 
Biography: For the past eleven years, Robert DiGiovanni, Jr. has been the Foundation Director/Senior Biologist of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, a 501©(3) dedicated to the preservation and protection of our marine environment. Robert has responded to over 2900 marine mammal and sea turtle strandings and has directed staff and volunteers in various rescue and rehabilitation techniques.
